Vale John Corrigan

It’s hard to find the words to express our shock at the passing John Corrigan this week after the clubs Annual General Meeting.

He was a great club person. He was a much loved team mate, club member and friend.

Our love is with John’s partner Becky Chanock, and his family.

Johns mate Vince Murphy wrote the following:

Following the AGM on Thursday night John Corrigan and I shared a pint, downstairs at the Wild Geese Hotel. On the TV John’s beloved Carlton we’re in control of their final match of the season so Corro was pretty relaxed. John was happy that Francis Evans (a YPCC alumuni) was doing well for the Blues. We chatted about the coming cricket season, about how his health (John was diagnosed with a very nasty disease that affects the brain known as Multiple System Atrophy a few years back), we talked about how his doctor did not want him to drive anymore but he was resisting because he wanted to go to the gym.

Ciara Boyle came over and somehow we got to talking about where John had studied. To both Ciara’s and my amazement Corro rattled off a list of his “education” including a year at American University studying liberal arts in Dublin, 6 weeks in the navy being seasick to Denmark and back, a guitarist in a band as well as few other courses in Australia. After the footy finished and the pub was closing John called an Uber and me and several of the remaining YPCCers said “Seeya Corro”. It was typical night nothing of great note, just the usual.

I could never have thought that would be the last time I would see John Corrigan. Becky contacted me on Friday morning to say that John had died peacefully during the night.

John was a special bloke. Funny, smart, kind and thoughtful. He was an excellent cricket captain especially nurturing the juniors as they came through the team. He had an encyclopaedic memory especially about sports. He loved trivia and was always throwing questions into the 6th XI WhatsApp chat group. He took it seriously too! He would update me with Trivia night wins or near wins. And was brilliant as the quiz convener at YPCCs most recent trivia night. I know he loved putting it together.

But mostly he was a great friend to me and to many others, he is gone too soon, and we shall honour him for the special man that he was.

We’ll keep the club informed when we have further details about John’s funeral arrangements.

RIP Corro
